Fire/EMS Appreciation Day at Bowles Farm

By: Captain Jaime Weber,
Date: October 19, 2005

On Sunday, October 16, crews from the station came together to wash apparatus to participate in the Appreciation Day at the Corn Maze. Once there, we opened up our new Ambulance 197 to show visitors the inside of each compartment and the back of the ambulance. We also handed out coloring books, stickers and magnets to the children for EMS Awareness.

The fire departments hosted a variety of automobile scenarios as well as Fire Prevention handouts. The first demonstration was conducted by the Seventh District Fire Dept. that consisted of a vehicle well-off. The spectators were able to see the initial attack as well as how the vehicle was secured.

The second demonstration was hosted by the Ridge Fire Dept. consisting of a MVA single vehicle that required the doors to be popped, dash roll for a "trapped patient" and the removal of the roof.

The third demonstration was hosted by the Hollywood Fire Dept. using Truck 7 showing spectators how to repell off of the ladder truck. Due to some issues with the rings in the harness, we were unable to see the full effects.

The last demonstration was hosted by the Leonardtown Fire Dept., Leonardtown Rescue Squad, and Mechanicsville Rescue Squad. The demonstration consisted of a head on with heavy-extrication and two patients. the car that is upright contained the two patients. The crews from the Squad and Engine stabilized the vehicles and went to work on popping the doors to allow EMS crews to assess the patients and rapidly extricate one patient. After the first patient was removed and taken into A295, the crews removed the roof to enable freeing the second patient to remove him from the vehicle to A197.

During the day, EMS crews from Leonardtown and Mechanicsville participated in stretcher and stair chair races. The stretcher race required the stretcher to stay on the ground and crews run across the barn to the patient. The patient had to be fully immobilized using a c-collar, head blocks and securing the patient to the back board. Once the patient was secured, the crew had to race the stretcher back across the barn to the finish line. The stair chair race required the crew to run to the other side of the barn and place the patient in the stair chair and secure them to the chair. Once secured, they had to race back across the barn to the finish line.

All of the crews had a great time. We would like to thank Tommy and Tina Bowles for inviting us to join the event. Thank you to Jonathan Scully for heading up the event and activities for the day. Thank you to Jamie and Lexi Trader (Chief Larry Trader's children) for volunteering to be the patients in the races and vehicle extrications. Also, thank you to Champion Used Auto Parts for the donation of the vehicles used in the automobile demonstations to allow us to train for real life calls.
