Deer Strike Sends One to St Mary's Hospital

By: Captain Christopher Risso,
Date: November 04, 2009

At 1630 on Wednesday, November 4, Volunteers from Leonardtown Rescue Squad along with the Leonardtown Fire Department and Hollywood Rescue Squad were dispatched to a Motor Vehicle Accident with Injuries on the 43000 block of St Andrews Church Rd.

Ambulance 199 responded with Captain Chris Risso, EMT/IVT Jacqueline Norris, EMT/IVT Lisa Morgan, and Junior Member David Borland on board. 199 was first to arrive on scene and found a single vehicle with a single patient inside. Squad 1 arrived and assumed scene command. Ambulance 196 was also en route with EMT/IVT Mary Borland and Driver Mock Mattingly. 196, Company 79, and Engine 10 were placed in service by command on scene.

The accident was caused by a HUGE 8-point buck attempting to cross the road. The vehicle had moderate damage but the driver sustained minor injuries and was able to walk to the ambulance. The patient was transported to St. Mary's Hospital as a precaution.

Sadly, the deer succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Units: Ambulance 199, Ambulance 196
Mutual Aid: Squad 1, Engine 10
